KT News 15-09-2024:/ Ethiopia remains resolute in its commitment to utilizing its water resources equitably and responsibly in pursuit of national development, according to Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Taye Atsiksilase.
Speaking to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Ambassador Taye emphasized the nation’s unwavering efforts to harness its natural resources for the advancement of its people.
He underscored the critical importance of a reliable energy supply in achieving sustainable development that benefits all citizens.
The ambassador further highlighted Ethiopia’s focus on meeting its energy demands through the expansion of renewable energy sources.
Ambassador Taye praised the nation’s ongoing initiatives, particularly in water resource management, citing the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a symbol of Ethiopia’s responsible development strategy.
He emphasized that Ethiopia has no intent to harm neighboring countries, noting that the dam also offers significant benefits to downstream nations.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has previously reiterated in discussions with leaders of downstream countries that the GERD serves as a cornerstone of regional cooperation, promoting development and shared prosperity.
Ambassador Taye reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue, grounded in international principles of fairness and equitable resource use.
Nevertheless, he firmly rejected the imposition of colonial-era agreements on the Nile, stating that any attempt to obstruct Ethiopia’s legitimate development goals is unacceptable and destined to fail.
