KT News 08-09-2024/:- In a renewed appeal for peace, the Amhara Region Peace Council has emphasized its commitment to negotiations, despite the ongoing conflict and worsening humanitarian situation in the region. The Council confirmed that the Amhara regional government remains dedicated to pursuing dialogue. However, it highlighted the challenges in securing a representative for the Fano militants due to the lack of consensus among the group.
The Peace Council expressed concern over the federal government’s lack of a clear negotiating stance, noting that despite their initial call for negotiations two months ago, no substantive response has been received. Instead, the situation on the ground has deteriorated, with continued fighting and an intensifying humanitarian crisis.
In response, the Council announced efforts to garner international support to apply diplomatic pressure and facilitate robust negotiations. Discussions have already been scheduled with key international stakeholders, including the United States, the African Union (AU), and the European Union (EU).
The Council also urged influential figures within Ethiopia, as well as all concerned parties, to collaborate and exert pressure for the commencement of peace talks. In a final plea, the Council once again called on both the government and Fano's forces to engage in peaceful negotiations to alleviate the severe crisis facing the people in the region.
