U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, Embarks on Mission to Belgium, Kenya, and Ethiopia


KT News /05-09-2024/: U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Mike Hammer, will undertake a diplomatic trip to Belgium, Kenya, and Ethiopia from September 3 to 13, 2024.

During his visit to Brussels, Ambassador Hammer will engage with European Union and bilateral counterparts to discuss recent developments in the Horn of Africa. In Nairobi, he will confer with Kenyan officials on regional security and related issues.

In Addis Ababa, Hammer will follow up with officials from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) regarding the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) Group’s recent initiatives in Switzerland. 

Additionally, he will review the implementation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement concerning northern Ethiopia with the relevant signatories.

The U.S. remains committed to supporting the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Interim Regional Administration in their pursuit of sustainable peace. 

This includes efforts in effective disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of ex-combatants, facilitating the orderly return of internally displaced persons, and advancing transitional justice and accountability.

Lastly, Special Envoy Hammer will engage with Ethiopian officials on ongoing efforts to foster dialogue and end violence in the Amhara and Oromia regions.
