Youth Health Indispensable for Economic Transformation: Officials

KT News 03-09-2024/:  Ensuring the health of young people is crucial for achieving holistic development, officials emphasized yesterday at the 5th National Adolescents and Youth Health Forum.

In her opening remarks, Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba stressed that addressing youth health challenges requires proactive efforts across all sectors. She highlighted that the forum aims to drive tangible changes to secure the mental and physical well-being of young people, a priority for the government.

Dr. Mekdes stated that her ministry is actively working to provide timely health information to combat the spread of misinformation in the health sector. Key priorities include addressing sexual health issues, delivering accurate health information, and ensuring that persons with disabilities have access to health services. She also noted ongoing efforts to enhance health services in industrial parks, youth centres, and schools.

Education Minister Professor Brehanu Nega underscored the importance of nutritional security in ensuring that youth are mentally and physically healthy. He mentioned that the ministry is taking various measures and mobilizing support to safeguard youth health, helping them achieve their aspirations. However, he warned that stunting remains a serious issue in parts of the country, calling for expanded health education and practical interventions to promote youth health.

Professor Brehanu emphasized the need for a new generation that is both mentally and physically fit, prepared to face the challenges of globalization. The Ministry of Education is collaborating with relevant stakeholders to create conducive environments in schools.

Women and Social Affairs Minister Dr. Ergoge Tesfaye added that adulthood presents a golden opportunity if properly utilized. She noted that Ethiopia has a large youth population capable of driving sustainable development, and that investing in youth should be a national priority to ensure the health of future generations. Dr. Ergoge stressed the importance of raising awareness on sexual health, addiction, and other harmful behaviours.

Currently, there are over 3,000 youth centres across the country where awareness campaigns are being conducted to strengthen the mental and physical health of young people, she mentioned.

The forum, held under the theme "Access and Quality: A Responsive Health System for All Adolescents and Youth," was attended by ministers, youth representatives, and development partners.
